Chaos was a physical manifestation of the darkest, most conflicted parts of the being known as The Vanishing Commutator, and an extremely powerful being responsible for ending the previous universe (“The Land of Nod”).
Imprisoned for an unfathomable duration at the far edge of the previous universe, Chaos was able to cultivate an ability to communicate to various, receptive parties. In some cases, Chaos communicated with particularly susceptible individuals; in other cases, the communication was with beings that Chaos himself had created prior to his imprisonment (including the Sentry of Chaos).
After being freed from his prison by Vampira Infernalis, Chaos tortured and killed friend and foe alike before destroying the universe itself. The Vanishing Commutator sacrificed himself in order to ensure that Chaos would not return to threaten life within the new multiverse.
